Haven House
Haven House serves as our entry point for women without children, offering a community-style living arrangement. The first phase is a highly structured program focused entirely on achieving and maintaining sobriety, lasting about six months. Participants will work with a case manager, attend mandatory meetings, complete the DWC Rethinking Alcohol and Drugs (RAD) Class, participate in daily AA/NA meetings and seek part-time employment. Residents will adhere to the rules and consistently work on relapse prevention. All these requirements are necessary before transitioning to Abba House. Rent is set at $150 per month, which can be earned by volunteering at Thrift City during the initial phase until they secure employment.

Haven House Too
Haven House Too is our entry point for women with children, featuring four bedrooms where families share a kitchen, bathrooms, and a living area. These women, often coming from the streets or referred by other shelters or individuals, are new to recovery and have nowhere else to place their children. The first phase consists of a structured program focused entirely on achieving and maintaining sobriety, lasting about seven months. Abba House
Abba House serves as our mid-level shelter for Level 4 women who have graduated from the Haven Houses. It features nine small efficiency apartments where families share bathrooms and a living area. These women have diligently learned how to maintain sobriety and apply the skills they’ve been taught to succeed in their recovery journey. Whether with or without their children, they will work with a case manager, attend mandatory meetings, and hold a part-time job while preparing to move to Gratitude House.
During their stay, which is approximately three months, these women continue to enhance their budgeting skills, improve their parenting and homemaking abilities, work on building positive self-esteem, and develop other essential life skills. Emphasis is also placed on restoring family relationships, and returning to a productive, drug-free lifestyle by setting educational, financial and spiritual goals. Rent is $200 per month. Residents have the option to complete our program without moving on to Gratitude House upon graduating from Level 4. A certificate of completion will be awarded to those who choose this path.
Gratitude House
Gratitude House represents the final stage of our DWC Recovery Program. This 40-unit apartment complex includes the Opportunity School for younger children and is conveniently located near DWC’s thrift stores, where some women work and others volunteer to help cover their nominal rent.
Nearby, there are daycare centers, an elementary school and Elwood Park is just across the street, offering a playground and park for outdoor activities. While residing at Gratitude House, residents are asked to pay $250 per month for a one-bedroom apartment, which comes fully furnished and includes all utilities. Two-bedroom apartments with the same amenities are available for $300 per month. Women in this final phase are expected to work or attend school, while also participating in AA/NA meetings, weekly mandatory in-house group meetings, counseling sessions, and case management.
Upon completing Level 7, our residents graduate from the DWC Recovery Program. This milestone is celebrated twice a year and marks a significant achievement. Graduates receive a personalized DWC cross necklace, a percentage of the rent they’ve paid back, new dishes, new cookware, and many other gifts to help them start their new life. They also have the option to stay in their apartment at a reduced rate for another year after graduation, allowing them to continue saving money or pursue education. Additionally, we offer outreach continued care for our graduates who move out on their own.
