DWC’s experience through the COVID pandemic

These past twelve months have been a traumatic experience not only in our Amarillo community but for the entire world.  Our lives have forever changed.

We have been reminded of our resilience in overcoming the most difficult of circumstances.  We have learned to sacrifice for the sake of others.  We have been reminded of our ability to reach out and help our fellow neighbors.  We have been reminded of having the simplest of pleasures – toilet paper.  We have been reminded of how precious life is as we have lost those close to us.

Our new reality is wearing masks as part of our fashion statement in the long run.  Zoom meetings have become our new norm.  Weekly trips to the grocery store have become our social outings.  And, most everyone will have a vaccine soon!

DWC has had its challenges during COVID, but we have survived and become stronger as an organization through the grace of God.  Haven House was temporarily closed in March 2020 because of the pandemic’s challenges.  DWC continued to serve women in recovery from substance use disorders at Abba House and Gratitude House.  We organized our first virtual Spring Luncheon in May 2020.  Although closed temporarily, our retail stores are opened and thriving.

DWC is optimistic about our future.  Haven House will be re-opening in late spring.  Our retail stores will remain open.  Our annual luncheon will take place on September 28th—in person and virtual—you won’t want to miss this one!  Our programs and services will continue to be available to homelss women in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction and for their children.

Thanks to all of you, DWC has been able to continue meeting our mission, “To provide housing and services to overcome homelessness and addiction.” There are no adequate words—just a whole lot of gratitude.
